A 2 Day Escape to Stormy Tofino

No matter the season, Tofino is the perfect BC getaway – but we just so happen to love storm watching season-best. Somehow, Tofino is that much more magical when it’s windy and grey, and rainy days are spent watching the relentless waves crash on the shore. Tofino is located in such a diverse, beautiful region of lush rainforest and long stretches of beach and rocky coastline that two days just doesn’t feel like enough when there’s so much to explore.

REUBEN + BRIE + OLIVER - TOFINO

One of our favourite parts of the journey to Tofino is the scenic ride with BC Ferries from Horseshoe Bay in West Vancouver to Departure Bay in Nanaimo, on Vancouver Island. Being out on the ocean, navigating through the Gulf Islands, and breathing in the fresh, salty sea air is such a quintessential BC experience. For such a small surf town, Tofino is filled with fabulous cafes, shops, and galleries. With farm to table restaurants, a brewery, and artisan coffee shops, Tofino has become much more than just an adventure destination. This particular trip was incredibly special to us as it was our first time bringing our two-month-old, Oliver, to one of our favourite places in the world. We had a little of everything – days of pouring rain and wind where we bundled up with raincoats and pulled on our gumboots to explore Long Beach and Incinerator Rock, and a sunny afternoon where we hiked along the beautiful Tonquin Trail amongst the pines. We spent a warm November afternoon on quiet Tonquin Beach overlooking Clayoquot Sound and later strolled through town, popping into cafes and perusing some of the carefully curated local shops. In the late afternoons, we cozied up by the fire in the beautiful Great Room of Long Beach Lodge and watched the surfers tackle the waves in Cox Bay. Our evenings were spent walking along the misty beach in front of the resort to catch the sunset – this was a favourite thing to do. It was three days of perfect, west coast life. Storm watching in Tofino is one BC winter experience that shouldn’t be missed.

Long Beach Lodge is idyllic in its location. With its 41-room main lodge and stunning restaurant overlooking the layers of waves rolling up on Cox Bay Beach, it’s the perfect place to relax, feel surrounded by nature, and find adventure. We decided to stay in one of their 20 two-bedroom cottages to use the extra space AND have our own personal hot tub. Long Beach Lodge Resort also features a Surf Club Adventure Centre that provides both rentals and lessons for those eager to hit the waves, as well as a sauna, hot pool and coffee bar to help you warm up after wandering along the chilly beach.
