Rest
It’s the (least) most wonderful time of the year…flu season. Although we have had our flu shots, Reub and I have been feeling run down, and under the weather these past few days, so we decided to head out for a little recovery time. Why is it that as soon as the holidays are over and you finally let your body slow down, you start to feel it?! Oliver has yet to get sick, so we dropped him off with some sick-free family on Vancouver Island, and escaped to a place we’ve been dying to visit – but weren’t able to bring Ollie along. (For safety reasons, no kids allowed…sorry, Ollie!) This isn’t your typical getaway; it’s more like what you’d conjure up in a dream…playing amongst the treetops, shrouded by foliage, and living the most minimalistic life. Sounds pretty perfect to us.
Relax
We packed our bags and some little care packages, determined to utilize the next few days as the ultimate escape for rest and relaxation. Just north of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island near a little town called Qualicum Beach lives one of the most unique getaways that has been on our bucket list for a long time, Free Spirit Spheres. These spherical treehouses were everything that we dreamed of: tiny, perfectly designed and surprisingly spacious, with round windows that look out into the enchanted BC rainforest. Each treehouse has a one-of-a-kind sleeping solution, whether your bed folds down from the wall or magically drops down from the ceiling, and the winding staircases that lead to your front door are literally what we dreamt up as kids. The treehouses are designed as spheres to make the most of their space and so lovingly thought out that they take approximately 3 to 5 years to come to fruition. They’re built in such a way that they will leave no trace if they are ever moved, and we really appreciated the staff’s care and consideration for the surrounding environment.
Recover
It was the perfect place for us to find some rest, relaxation and recovery time. We brought our vitamin-packed care package with us to battle whatever bugs were trying to bring us down. Our favourite, Jamieson Cold Fighter , is exactly what we needed to nip it in the bud – it fights early signs of cold and flu symptoms, helps relieve yucky sore throats, coughs and congestion, and most importantly, helps to shorten the duration of colds. It combines Echinacea, Vitamin C, Ginger and Zinc, (proven cold-busting ingredients) and is available in soft gel and chewable tablets. Combined with our usual Vitamin C and Vitamin D tablets to help keep our immune systems working at their best, we felt armed to make the most of our relaxation mode.
We admittedly spent a lot of time inside our cozy warm treehouse sipping hot drinks, reading and listening to tunes (the acoustics are REALLY good in a sphere!), but we also got some fresh air by walking amongst the trees, skipping along the bridges to the other treehouses, and visiting some of our local favourite Vancouver Island spots. Each treehouse has its own mushroom hut outhouse (if an outhouse could ever be adorable, this would be it…), and its own bathhouse with full plumbing, so it really is a true glamping experience. Free Spirit Spheres is an incredible getaway, so if you’re looking to do something a little different, if you’ve always dreamt of sleeping in a treehouse, or if you’re just looking to get a little peace and quiet, consider visiting this little slice of west coast paradise.
