January bits! Made it through what always feels like the longest month of the year. Turns out it wasn't so bad. ☺️🤍

Now that I've had some time to reflect back on our

Now that I've had some time to reflect back on our 5 week trip to Australia, here are the things I wish I could go back and tell myself.

1. Lower your expectations. Stop trying to “see it all.” With 3 young kids, the sooner you let go of that stress to have everything work out perfectly and to do as much as possible, the more everyone will enjoy!

2. Consider your accommodation as part of the vacation, even if that means more $. Between naptimes, downtimes and mealtimes, you'll be spending a LOT of time there. We skimped on one of our rentals and quickly regretted it.

3. Cook at home more. We found it was always a win when we chose one meal to eat out every few days, and picked a spot with safe outdoor spaces and kid friendly menus. Meal prep and plan ahead. (Picnic at the beach? Yes please!)

4. Establish a routine. Too many times we were going with the flow, but our kids are at an age where they crave predictability and routine. They were constantly nagging about what each day would look like, and most of the time we didn't know.

5. Let some bad behaviour slide! New experiences, new environment, lack of routine - it is a LOT for little developing brains. "Poor behaviour", fighting, whining...it can feel overwhelming but I promise you, if you stop trying to constantly fix it and instead give your kids grace and understanding, you'll avoid a lot of burnout.

6. Not every day needs to be “epic.” When you're in a new place, ordinary days can be the best stories. Grocery shopping, errands, cooking at home - make it all part of your family experience. No time is wasted time.

7. It's okay to parent differently when you're travelling. Say "yes" to ice cream for dinner and the $3 ride at the mall. Bring the iPad on a stroller walk so that you can actually enjoy the views. Shed some of that shame and parenting pressure, you're doing great!

8. Focus more on the little joys. I keep thinking back to this coffee I had at an outdoor cafe while the kids were playing on the sidewalk. I can still feel how happy this moment was, how delish the coffee tasted, how content I felt. More moments like this please. 💛

Nope, not worried. 😇🌎✈️ Honestly, the 5 weeks we spent in Australia felt like a lifetime in terms of development. We’ve never seen the kids flourish more, all 3 of them developed in ways we never could have predicted. Who knew?!

This year we’re setting simple goals: cook more, create more, slow down when we need to, and actually enjoy the little moments in between. We’re getting back into cooking proper meals, upgrading our coffee ritual, and carving out quiet moments for a clear mind (with noise-cancelling headphones of course!) It’s all about making home/work life balance work better for us.

☕ Ninja Luxe Café - omg...it’s the dream! She makes espresso, regular coffee, and cold brew like a pro. We love her.

🍰 Kitchenaid Stand Mixer - she is an absolute stunner. We’ve been dreaming of this mixer for a while and finally picked it up - the most beautiful mixer to ever exist! So powerful and makes baking feel way more doable.

🔪 Global Knife Set - we upgraded a few of our essential kitchen tools, including this knife set. So slick and sharp, makes prep way faster, highly recommend!

🍳 Lodge Cast Iron Skillet - a classic for a reason. Heats evenly and works for pretty much evvverything. We’re total cast iron converts.

🪵 Paderno Maple Cutting Board - why didn’t we do this sooner? Solid, heavy, and doesn’t slide around - a must!

Top 3 tips for travelling long haul with kids ✈️

Ok so flying BACK from Australia to Canada is a doozy - any parent who’s done it knows this! BUT, this flight went better for us than expected with our 7 year old, 3 year old, and 1 year old. (That’s not to say it was easy!) Trust us, we know that’s not always how it goes. 😮‍💨

The kids slept a bit, (our 7 year old slept 6 hours, our 3 year old slept 2 hours, and our 1 year old slept 3 hours), the big kids had way too much screen time, ate way too many snacks (no rules on flights!) and we wrangled our 1 year old by passing her back and forth, doing aisle walks, and bringing out different toys to keep her occupied. She’s wiggly and is already walking so she wanted to be up and about, but we managed to keep her mostly happy despite her waking up every time a flight attendant opened a can of soda near us. 😅

The truth is: you can’t predict how a long haul flight will go. You can’t predict who will sleep, who will melt down, or what curveballs will come your way.

So here are our top 3 tips:

1️⃣ Be over-prepared
LOTS of activities, (preferably new ones or toys they haven’t seen in a while), more snacks than seems reasonable, extra clothes, meds, and downloaded shows or movies galore.

2️⃣ Have low expectations
Lower the bar. Way lower. If you have kids 2 and under, it WILL be a challenge. It makes anything above survival feel like a win! No one around you cares about what your kids are doing as much as you think they do.

3️⃣ Stay calm
Your kids feel your energy - and they usually mirror it. The less stress you feel leading up to the trip and on the flight the better. Easier said than done, we know!
